Look Good By Wearing Your Cowboy Boots Properly

Articles

Cowboy boots, which aren't just for men and boys, are a quintessential piece of western wear. They're appropriate in many settings, from the bleachers to the board room, but the way they should be worn varies with the type of pants (or skirt) you have on. Here is a guide to wearing cowboy boots so you'll look good in any setting.

Skirts and Dresses: Should Fall Just Above the Knee

Any skirt or dress can be worn with cowboy (or cowgirl) boots, regardless of its length, but boots go best with skirts and dresses that fall just above the knee. At this length

  • the skirt or dress is long enough to be modest
  • the boots aren't covered up
  • a little leg shows between the top of the boot and hem of the skirt or dress

Shorts: Depends on Gender

Whether you can get away with wearing shorts and boots together depends on your gender. As with skirts, women can wear boots and shorts together. Men, however, should never wear cowboy boots with a pair of shorts. People don't mind seeing a lady's leg, but a man's hairy kneecap isn't nearly as attractive.

Jeans: Depends on the Boots

Jeans go with cowboy boots like peanut butter goes with jelly. Whether jeans belong inside or outside of the boots, though, depends on the type of boots you have.

Jeans should be worn inside fancy boots, in order to show off the artwork of the boot. If your boots have a design or are made from an unusual leather, such as alligator hide or snakeskin, tuck your pant legs into your boots. Most straight-legged jeans will fit inside a pair of cowboy boots, and skinny jeans will easily fit inside them.

With plain boots, such as work and roper boots, jeans look best outside of the boots. These are designed for the range rather than the dance hall, and they don't usually have intricate designs. They aren't meant to be shown off. Regular-cut jeans usually will fit over a pair of boots, as will boot-cut jeans. You may also want to try bell bottoms, which are making a comeback according to Cosmopolitan.

Khakis: Go Outside Boots

Khakis should be outside of cowboy boots, regardless of whether the boots are fancy or plain. Khakis, being a neutral color, are sterile. This is one of the main reasons why they're appropriate for business settings: khakis don't offend anyone or draw attention. Cowboy boots, although also appropriate for a business setting, should be covered by khakis' pant legs so that the boots don't detract from the pants' neutrality.

Although Khakis are typically tan or brown, they can be worn with any color cowboy boots -- even black ones. As Sachin Bhola explains, the fashion rule against wearing black and brown together is outdated. It's now acceptable, especially if two different materials create the look. The leather of the boots and fabric of the khakis will create a nice contrast.

Dress Pants: Go Outside Boots

Dress pants also belong outside of cowboy boots, but for a different reason. Dress pants ought to be just long enough to touch the floor at the heel, and there should be a single horizontal crease in the front of each pant leg. Wearing dress pants inside of boots would scrunch them up, ruining the look and possibly destroying the vertical crease that runs down the center of each pant leg.

Before you head out in a pair of cowboy boots again, think about what you're wearing with them. Cowboy boots are appropriate in almost any setting, but they must be worn properly. Follow these rules, and you'll look just fine.
