What Can You Do When Your Flowers Start To Wilt?

Blog

Despite good care, your fresh cut flowers will eventually wilt. Wilting does not necessarily mark the end for your flowers though. There are many ways you can repurpose them and extend their lifespan. If you have received fresh cut flowers, here is what you need to know.

Can You Revive Wilted Flowers?

Once a flower starts to wilt, you can possibly revive it if you act quickly. Ideally, you have taken such steps as keeping the flowers out of direct sunlight and replacing the clean water to help slow the wilting. However, even these measures will not stop the process. You can temporarily revive them though and extend the lives of the blooms.

After the blooms have started to wilt, you can remove an inch from the stem of the flowers. You can then place the blooms in a vase with two or three teaspoons of sugar. If the blooms do not respond in a few hours to the sugary solution, add another teaspoon of sugar and more water.

The sugar is believed to duplicate part of the photosynthesis process, which gives the flowers a natural boost so they can last a bit longer.

How Can You Repurpose the Flowers?

Even with the aid of the sugar water, your flowers will eventually die. However, there is no reason to be sad or feel guilty. There are many ways you can repurpose the flowers and enjoy them longer.

For instance, you can turn the dried blooms into potpourri. You can make your own mix of various other items, including spices and dried fruits. There are many homemade potpourri recipes available online that you can use to experiment.

If you have dead roses, you can use those to create your own rose water. Rose water has been used to hydrate the skin and even soften the hair. Before creating the water, rinse the roses carefully to remove any chemicals that might be on them.

The flowers can be used to freshen your home or car. Although the flowers are wilted, they will retain their scent for a relatively long period of time. Until the scent is gone, you can place the flowers in a mesh pouch and place them in your drawers or car. Make sure the pouch is sealed to avoid spilling them.

There are many other uses for wilted flowers that you should explore. Talk to your local flower shop for ideas and to learn what you can do in the future to extend the life of your fresh cut flowers.
